You will need to visit the Mississippi State Department of Health. The address is 570 E Woodrow Wilson Ave Jackson, MS 39216. Its the old Jackson Mall. You will need a overseas "yellow book" or record to show when you land in Malawi.

Your best chances to get in and out quickley is to arrive when it opens at 7:30.

If your child is under 18 you must accompany them. If you are not in the Mississippi state system for shot records then bring your records with you.

Recommended Immunizations:

1.  You must have Yellow Fever - it last for 10 years.

2.  Tetanus vaccination

3.  Childhood vaccinations: measles, whooping cough, polio, and chicken pox.

4.  Ask your doctor for recommended immunizations for Malawi. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Rabies are some that other people have considered.

Malaria Medication:

To receive Malaria medication you are going to need a prescription from a doctor.

Please remember we do not want you to use Larium or Mefloquine.  We prefer you to use Malarone or Doxycycline.  Doxy is an antibiotic that many short term teams use.  It is effective for anti-malaria and helps with stomach bugs or other issues overseas.  We recommend this but please be aware if you are fair skinned the sun can effect you.

Additional Medicine:

We also recommend that you take Airborne while traveling.

Bring travel hand sanitizer and sanitizer wipes.

We will be flying through South Africa on our way to and from Malawi.  South Africa is very strict on security and will require specific information from students under the age of 18 who are not traveling with their parents.  To find out what documents and letters you will need to have with you in transit please click on the button below.

You will need to purchase a "3 month single entry visa".

In order to do this you will need to mail to following to the Malawian Embassy in Washington D.C.

  • 2 copies of your visa application
  • 2 passport sized photos (2x2)
  • 2 copies of your flight itinerary
  • 2 copies of a letter of invitation
  • actual passport with a full empty page
  • a prepaid return envelope
  • $100 payment in cash, money order, or bank-certified check (no personal checks)
